If we’re being totally honest, Georgia is just a downright charming place to live. But even more so, Georgia is also known as a safe place to live as well. Each year, FBI crime data is compiled and analyzed in order to determine the safest cities in Georgia. The information calculated involves certain metrics like property crimes, violent crimes, larceny, and the like, then assessed in conjunction with per capita numbers. Thanks to the team over at SafeWise, the annual Safest Cities report was calculated and for Georgia, there may be some surprises on the list.
1. Johns Creek, GA
A newcomer to the list, the city ranked as safest city in Georgia is Johns Creek. A town that's not small any means, Johns Creek is home to 85,408, so it's quite impressive that it ranks as the safest in the state! Low property and crime rates, coupled with a stellar standard of living make Johns Creek one of the best places to settle down and raise a family in Georgia.
2. Milton, GA
Milton, Georgia is a long-standing leader in terms of the safest cities in Georgia. One of the main factors contributing to this statistic is because Milton saw violent crime rates under one per 1,000 people for the third straight year.
3. Tyrone, GA
Tyrone, Georgia, actually fell a spot this year, but don't let its drop deter you from this charming locale. The violent crime rate is well under 1% per 1,000 residents. What's more, Tyrone is consistently hailed as one of the happiest cities in Georgia, making it all-around winner in our book!
4. Hampton, GA
Holding strong at the #4 spot for a second year in a row is the charming town of Hampton. Low violent crime rates remain well below state and national average, but you might want to keep an eye on your valuables, as property crime rates are a bit higher than the other towns on this list. (Though Hampton's instances of 6 property crimes out of every 1,000 remain well below the state average. Georgia’s property crime rate of 20.1 sits above the national average of 19.6 and the South Atlantic average of 18.9.)
5. Peachtree City, GA
The motto of Peachtree City, GA, is "Plan to Stay" -- and indeed, after visiting this beguiling town of 34,000, you'll want to put down roots! This newcomer to the list of safest cities in Georgia is quite a gem. The planned community of Peachtree City is home to the golf cart "car" and several golf courses, and streets are lined with golf cart paths. The land and properties in this city are absolutely stunning. And although its population is by no means "small," Peachtree City has the warm and welcoming spirit of a small town!
6. McRae-Helena
This town of around 8,200 was formed by the unification of its namesakes, and it's a tiny-but-mighty little locale in south-central Georgia.
7. Douglas, GA
This town of just under 12,000 residents in rural Georgia is a bit of an undiscovered gem. This charming town is home to the WWII Flight Training Museum, one of our favorite day trips in the Peach State. The museum is located at what was once the 63rd Army Air Forces Contract Pilot School, one of dozens of such pilot schools in the country founded during World War II. The Army quickly needed trained pilots, and the schools worked to get soldiers in and out as efficiently as possible. In terms of crime rates, violent crime rates are less than 1 in 1,000; property crime, however, affects nearly 10 out of ever 1,000 residents.
8. Braselton, GA
Braselton has dropped several spots this year to become #8 on the list of safest cities in Georgia. But, the violent crime and property crime averages are significantly less than the Georgia state average, as well as the overall national average.
9. Jefferson, GA
Jefferson is a town of around 12,000 residents that's located in Jackson County, about an hour northeast of Atlanta. The city's family population is about 30% of its total population, and its school system is highly ranked. In terms of crime, the town comes in at just 0.7, well below national and state average. For these reasons, Jefferson has been hailed as one of the best towns to raise a family in Georgia.
10. Fairburn, GA
Rounding out the top 10 list of safest cities in Georgia for 2022 is Fairburn. A newcomer to the list, this town of 17,220 jumped 17 spots over last year's ranking! Between 2022 and 2021, property crime rates plummeted in Fairburn, dropping nearly 24 percentage points.
