Even though Delaware is the oldest state in the nation, there are few things that we can claim to have invented. However, we still claim fame to making these products right here in the first state, then sending them anywhere from one state over to outer space. Take a peek at these things that come from Delaware and you'll learn some interesting facts about Delaware all at the same time.
1. Spacesuits
ILC based in Frederica produces all sorts of protective equipment, but among its most famous is spacesuits used in many NASA missions. Not many people realize that of all the things that come from Delaware, these Apollo-era spacesuits travel the farthest from home.
2. Jell-O gelatin and pudding mixes
Feel like whipping up a batch of pudding or Jell-O? Thank the Kraft plant in Dover which recently celebrated 40 years of production! If you grew up in the Capital region, chances are you know someone who's worked there.
3. Chemicals
You might not see many finished products coming from the first state, but chances are some of the chemicals in them started off here thanks to the DuPont company and other manufacturers. Titanium dioxide (shown here) was once one of the most common; it's used in everything from sunscreen to colorings.
4. Teflon coating
If you like cooking with pans that are non-stick, thank DuPont's Teflon coatings made in Delaware! This life-changing invention is one of the most famous things that come from Delaware.
5. Drugs (the legal kind)
One of Delaware's top manufactured goods is pharmaceuticals, with top companies not just making medicines here but having their headquarters in the state.
6. Baby wipes
So many people don't realize that many baby wipe manufacturers are based right here in the First State.
7. Fuel cells
Bloom Energy in Newark makes fuel cells that are installed locally at places like Delmarva Power and private locations, as well as nationwide at major companies, as a way to produce clean energy.
8. Tang, Crystal Light, and Kool-Aid mixes
When you get thirsty this summer and turn to a classic powdered drink mix, it might have been made in Delaware! Many of these originate in the First State.
9. Commercial food service equipment
Eagle Group in Clayton makes a variety of metal products like sinks, shelving, countertops, and more.
10. Feminine care products
Playtex is based in Delaware, and they make tampons and other feminine care products at the plant in Dover.
11. Shake 'N Bake
This breading product is yet another fine offering from the Dover, DE Kraft plant. They offer plenty of ways to whip up a quick family meal, from their barbecue glaze for chicken to their classic porkchip coating.
12. Beer and booze
Dogfish Head Beer is made in Milton and are available in about 31 states. And, slowly but surely, Delaware's blossoming distilleries and breweries are pumping out booze distributed regionally.
13. Paint
PPG Industries in Cheswold manufactures several different brands and types of paints, including Olympic. When was the last time you repainted a room in your house?
14. GORE-TEX
We weren't quite sure if we should put this one on the list, since technically it's not made in Delaware, but the polymer that was the foundation for GORE-TEX was discovered by Delaware's Bob Gore. The company is still headquartered in the state.
