One of the best things about living in New England is enjoying some of the best seafood in the world. This is especially true when thinking about the incredible delight of the lobster roll. It's a sandwich that proves the best things aren't always the most complex. Connecticut is often known for historical culinary firsts and the New England lobster roll is no exception. It all began in the town of Milford back in the 1920s.
Local Milford history says it was Harry Perry who owned Perry’s Meat/Fish Market who first introduced the world to the lobster roll when a regular customer came in asking for a quick lobster sandwich. In a matter of minutes, warm bits of lobster nestled on a soft french roll and the legend of the lobster roll was born.
Although many variations of the lobster roll were made in Connecticut, original credit was always given to Perry's Restaurant. For decades, a sign in the window declared the restaurant (then located at Boston Post Rd at Meadows End Rd) as "Home of the Lobster Roll."
The big debate since is whether a lobster roll tastes better warm and buttery or cold with mayo, scallions or celery, and tarragon. While that won't be explored right now, we will point out some of the best places in Connecticut to get a delicious lobster roll, no matter what your preference.
The award-winning lobster rolls at Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale in Westbrook is no tall tale. These lobster rolls are made with a half-pound of sautéed meat on a soft bun. It's soft, delicious, and mouthwatering just to think about.
Captain Scott's Lobster Dock in New London lets you get your lobster rolls on the go. Choose for yourself between a hot lobster roll or a lobster salad roll. Both are piled into a toasted bun.
You'll also find chilled lobster rolls to enjoy with a refreshing draft at S&P Oyster Restaurant and Bar in Mystic. These rolls have a little extra zest to them as the chef adds a little lemon, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, pepper, mayonnaise, and baby arugula.
Do you prefer your lobster roll warm and buttery or do you prefer a chilled lobster roll with mayo? Who do you think makes the best lobster rolls in Connecticut? Let us know in the comments.
