5 Places in Alabama I Wouldn’t Take My Worst Enemy

Love them or hate them, tourist traps are etched into our culture and are here to stay. Folks in the know skip these popular attractions in Alabama due to overcrowding, lack of authenticity, or hefty price tags. I have been to my share of these gimmicky places, and if I am honest, I am not completely against exploring them at least once. After all, some of us don’t mind commercialized locations, especially since many of them will get us tons of likes on our Instagram. 

Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately (depending on who is judging), I am at a stage in my life where I prefer quality, authentic experiences versus that next big selfie. If you can relate, here are my picks for the top tourist traps in Alabama to avoid. Even better? I made some alternative suggestions that you might like, too. 

1. The Wharf, Orange Beach

What can I say about The Wharf? It’s a popular waterfront entertainment district in Orange Beach for shopping, dining, and family-friendly activities. Some of the attractions include the Ferris Wheel, the SPECTRA Laser Light Experience (a music-coordinated light show), sunset cruises, and an amphitheater for concerts. The walkable village is the quintessential tourist destination full of glitz and lots of glam. This would be a dream spot to leave my worst enemy because they would never run out of things to do. As for me, I would take a leisurely stroll along Wolf Bay, the historic downtown district, and then treat myself to a delicious meal at Doc's Seafood Shack & Oyster Bar. Sounds like a perfect day to me.  

2. Point Mallard Water Park, Decatur

Fun Fact: Did you know that Point Mallard Water Park was home to the first wave pool this side of the Mississippi, and the oldest continually operating wave pool in America? Well, it’s true! And its legacy should be celebrated, especially after bringing us joy for over 55 years. Although it’s a wonderful destination for family-friendly fun, the water park can get crowded, especially on discount days. Plus, if you have a large group, the additional costs for food, lockers, and rentals can add up. Would I take my worst enemy here? Sure, just so that they can experience this iconic park at least once. However, since we have incredible beaches in Alabama, I would much rather pack my cooler and head to the sandy shores of the Gulf Coast.   

3. The Hangout, Gulf Shores

Speaking of the Gulf Coast. The Hangout in Gulf Shores is the ultimate beachfront joint where friends, families, locals, and visitors alike can have a good time. The non-stop party vibes here are electric, and the lively venue is a place to dance, eat, drink, play in the sand, get covered in foam, and more. It’s one of those popular tourist destinations where you’re guaranteed to have a blast and snap some really cool pics. If my worst enemy preferred a more laid-back atmosphere and hated delicious seafood, I would take them to Hangout and leave them there. Enjoying a shrimp sandwich from a no-frills, laid-back beachfront joint is more up my alley. 

4. Birmingham Race Course Casino, Birmingham

Nothing against Birmingham Race Course Casino, but I am just not a big fan of gambling. If after spending $20 (yes, I know I’m cheap), I walk away empty-handed, I am ready to go. Unfortunately, outside of gambling, there isn’t much to do at this casino. There are no Vegas-style shows or live entertainment at the low-key venue. But I would absolutely take my worst enemy here in hopes they will leave without a hefty payout. 

5. Talladega Superspeedway, Talladega

Call me crazy, but I don’t get the need for speed, and I have never understood the hype behind watching souped-up cars race around a track for hours. So, unfortunately, I am not rushing to Talladega Superspeedway anytime soon. Between the race-day traffic and parking nightmare, the all-day party scene, the chaotic crowds, and the hefty price tag, I prefer to skip this event altogether, even if it means leaving my worst enemy here to deal with the hassle. A better alternative? A breathtaking scenic drive through Talladega National Forest - no speeding required. Sitting in my car (in SILENCE) for almost an hour is more than enough torture for my worst enemy.
