Hiking in South Dakota is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air, and enjoy our state’s natural beauty. And this summer, some trails will burst into color as meadows are filled with beautiful wild flowers. Here’s one popular trail that you definitely don’t want to miss.

Harney Peak (also known as Black Elk Peak) is the highest point in South Dakota. It stands at 7,242 feet. Once you reach the end of this hike, you'll climb the fire tower for some stunning views of the surrounding Black Hills National Forest.

The trail makes a 7.1 mile loop. It's considered moderate, and parts of this trail are pretty steep. The effort is worth it, though, because...
