Polar Vortex Headed For South Dakota: Arctic Temps And Major Snowfall Expected
Here in South Dakota, we’re not usually fazed by cold weather. But this weekend may be an exception.
Starting Saturday night, temperatures will plummet, bringing in a polar vortex that is breaking records in this part of the country. Cold air from the North Pole promises to sweep through South Dakota, accompanied by a healthy dose of snow.
If you’re a resident of South Dakota, prepare for a deep freeze this weekend.
It comes as no surprise that with such arctic weather, snow accumulation will surely follow. Winter storm warnings are issued for a majority of the state, with snowfall up to eight inches expected.
This is all thanks to the polar vortex, a phenomenon which causes accumulated air pressure from the north poles to rush into North America. Along with the Dakotas, other states of the north and midwest will also be effected.
This week has marked the first wave of the vortex; the second promises to be even more brutal. So cold, in fact, that officials are advising one thing: stay indoors.
The weather service advises extreme caution, as these conditions can lead to frostbite and even hypothermia. If you must be outdoors for any reason, be sure to cover up all exposed skin and return indoors as quickly as possible.
