South Carolina is no stranger to tourism. From mountains to sea, this state has more activities to keep a family busy than anyone could ever possibly experience in a single lifetime. But when it comes to one type of attraction, there is only one like it in the entire state. The South Carolina Railroad Museum, located in Winnsboro, offers the ONLY purely scenic operational railway in all of South Carolina.
In season, visitors can purchase a ticket to board a train on the scenic Rockton, Rion & Western railway for the only ride of its kind around.
The options include either an open-air car, so you can feel the wind in your hair, or seating within the historical passenger car, where you'll feel like you've stepped back in time.
But, a couple of times a year the museum offers rides in a historic coal-fueled steam engine.
The steam train excursions are few and far between and can be among the most popular of the special events the museum hosts each year. Translation: get your tickets early, if you really want to go.
The South Carolina Railroad Museum just announced three upcoming steam train dates, and they are only weeks away.
The 2018 steam train excursions are set for three consecutive Saturdays: April 28, May 5, and May 12. Each Saturday will feature multiple one-hour train rides.
Don't miss this rare opportunity to ride the coal-powered steam train at the South Carolina Railroad Museum!
Trains depart on the above Saturdays at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.
More information, including where to buy tickets, can be found at this link. The South Carolina Railroad Museum is located at 110 Industrial Park Rd., Winnsboro, SC 29180.
