The White Horse Tavern is not only Rhode Island’s oldest bar, but it’s the oldest continuously operated restaurant in America. Since 1673, it has been a gathering place for everyone from our founding fathers to tourists and locals alike. Of course, a place with a building this old is bound to have some paranormal activity — and it does. The list of ghost stories here is longer than the cocktail menu.

This building was originally constructed in 1652 as a two-story home for Francis Brinley.

It was acquired by William Mayes, Sr. in 1673 and converted into the tavern it is today.
Of course, the building has been renovated numerous times, but it still retains a historic charm.

One of the main apparitions here is that of a man dressed in Colonial garb who tends to hang out by the fireplace. This is thought to be the spirit of a man who mysteriously died on the tavern's second floor.

Some guests also claim they've seen a woman wandering around the place. She seems to disappear into the fireplace.
If you're sitting at your table enjoying your meal and you hear a little girl crying, it may not be one of the guests.

Whether the tavern is haunted or not, it's pretty amazing to dine in an establishment that's older than our nation.
