If you grew up in Rhode Island, you've probably eaten your share of pizza strips. The thick dough slathered with fresh tomato sauce and baked in large trays is served in long, thin strips, and we can't seem to get enough of it. Pizza strips are one of Rhody's most iconic food. But in Johnston, one bakery has taken it one step further. Allow us to introduce you to pizza chips.
The Original Italian Bakery is located on Atwood Avenue in Johnston, where it has been a beloved local favorite for years.
Master Baker Don DePetrillo has been baking since 1967, where he owned a bakery on the corner of Veazie Street and Branch Avenue in Providence. Don founded The Original Italian Bakery in 2007, and the rest is history.
Don brought all his carefully curated recipes with him to the bakery, and everything he baked is phenomenal.
You'll find a wide variety of pastries and other treats in the display case, not to mention hearty calzones and freshly baked bread.
As the name implies, you'll see lots of Italian pastries here such as cannolis, zeppole, and more...
... but it's the pizza chips that keep people coming back for more.
While these are certainly more chips than pizza, they are unique, flavorful, and downright addictive.
Small pizza rounds are topped with a secret recipe tomato sauce, then topped with a bit of romano cheese and baked to perfection.
The pizza chips come in bags of eight. Try them yourself, or have them shipped to someone you know would appreciate them (we'd recommend doing both).
Pizza chips, pastries, and perfectly baked bread are what make The Original Italian Bakery so special.
The bakery is open daily from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., and you can order your pizza chips online for an easy pick-up. We recommend ordering a pastry or two as well.
