This haunted mansion in Rhode Island will amaze you and just might freak you out a little, too! If you are a fan of paranormal happenings and ghost stories, then this is the place for you.
The Breakers was built by the Vanderbilt Family as a summer residence in 1895. This was during the period known as The Gilded Age.
This five-story “cottage” has 70 rooms and was designed in the Italian Renaissance style. It’s a real look at American attempts to recreate the lavishness of European palaces.
Gold-lacquered woodwork, velvet brocades, sweeping staircases, carved mantles, and tall ceilings are just a few of the features which give the house its luxurious appeal. Back in the day, the house required no less than 33 servants to run successfully.
The house is built on the site of the original structure, which burned down in 1892. After the lavish reconstruction and before 1925, the family experienced a few tragedies.
This included the deaths of three of their children, a disinherited son guilty of an unapproved marriage, and the patriarch himself in 1896. It’s rumored that this grief is what keeps the spirit of Alice Vanderbilt tied to the building.
The house was opened up for tours by Alice’s only surviving child in 1948.
Allegedly, she has been spotted numerous times over the years. However, these sightings have not been enough to dissuade the family from still occupying the residence on the third floor, away from the general tour.
