Some of the oldest and most beautiful architecture in the world comprises houses of worship, and Pennsylvania is no exception to the rule. With Christianity as the dominant religion in the state, there are numerous cathedrals and chapels here that display breathtaking attention to detail and size. Here are ten of the most beautiful churches in Pennsylvania.
1. Cathedral Basilica Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia
Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, the largest Roman Catholic church in Pennsylaniva, is the seat of the diocese of Philadelphia and a national historic monument.
The pipe organ comprises over 4,500 pipes.
2. Christ Church, Philadelphia
Christ Church is the original American Episcopal church. This sketch from 1876 shows it standing beautiful as it still does today.
Christ Church is a popular tourist destination as well as the site of regular Episcopal services.
3. First Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh
One of the oldest Presbyterian churches in Western PA, First Presbyterian Church is nestled in downtown Pittsburgh.
It contains fourteen Tiffany stained glass windows.
4. St. Joseph Church, Erie
Wow, check out that ceiling. The beautiful dark blue fresco with white speckles imitates the deep night sky.
