If you have never taken this amazing hike, you need to change that soon. The Oneonta Gorge hike is a spectacular trail that leads you through 25-million-year-old basalt walls that look like they are out of this world.
The easy 1.5 mile trail begins just off the Columbia River Highway, and leads you through a historic tunnel to get things started.
While the trail is easy, you are going to want to go later in the year when the water warms up a bit and is lower, as for the most part, the river is the trail.

Wading is required, but by getting wet, you are able to see this amazing gorge with towering walls that makes you think you are in a secret land of your own.
Before long, you will reach the end of the trail, where the waterfalls will catch your imagination.
This is one hike close to Portland that you definitely have to experience to believe.
When you come across a log jam, be very careful crossing, as rocks and trees can be very slippery.
On a hot day this place is fantastic, and the beauty will make you forget where you are and just bask in the great light and amazing rock walls.

To reach Oneonta Gorge, take exit #35 on I-84 and head west for 2 miles on the Historic Columbia River Highway.
