Portland is an amazing place all its own. You may not realize it, but once you live here, you have ruined your chances of being happy anywhere else. Moving to another city seems futile when there are so many great things here that you would clearly miss out on. Here are 12 things that you may take for granted, but have actually tainted your perspective on reality after spending any length of time here.
1. Amazing Scenery
When you travel through the flat land of the Midwest or the dry, barren desert of the west, you can understand how amazing the scenery is at home. Portland has epic views, and just catching a glimpse of Mt. Hood a couple times a week has ruined life in any other city for you.
2. Street Food At Every Turn
In Portland, food carts are king. When you visit other cities, you may wander around aimlessly for this "fast" food, and realize that the reality is not the same in most other cities.
3. World Class Parks
Our parks really can't be beat. Forest Park, the country's largest urban park, is just one example that can leave you a little ruined for any other city. Mt Tabor, Laurelhurst Park, Council Crest Park, Cathedral Park and Waterfront Park are just a few more.
4. Live Music Explosion
Along with the countless music festivals that Portland plays host to, there is live music being played every night around town. From amazing funk, jazz and hip hop to rock, pop and electronic, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
5. Impressive Street Fairs
Portland streets come alive in the summer with street fairs everywhere you turn. The lively atmosphere is fun for families young and old, and adds a certain festive atmosphere to the city.
6. Farmers Markets Galore
We have weekly farmers markets throughout the entire city, including one that is so large it is more like a festival than a market. This indulgence of farm-fresh produce is incredible, especially when you consider it is not like this everywhere.
7. Thriving Arts Scene
We have multiple theaters, both ballet and orchestra! For a city of our size, we are thriving in the arts and have plenty to show for it.
8. Fresh Fruit Everywhere
Come summertime, Portland is literally bursting at the seams with fresh fruit. Whether you go pick it at any local farm or simply snag some grapes, blackberries or apples hanging over your neighbor's fence, you know you love the summer season for this reason.
9. Close Proximity to Wineries
We are just a hop, skip, and jump away from some world class wineries. Whether you want to sip some Pinot Noir or just soak up the incredible scenery, the wineries in the area definitely have us spoiled.
10. Our Library System
If you spend any time at one of Portland Public Library's many branches, you understand just how awesome our library really is. With a massive collection of books and great accessibility, we are spoiled with this public gem.
11. Craft Breweries, Distillers, and a Myriad of Bars and Lounges
Speaking of libraries, let's just point out that we have a Whisky Library in town. That, along with a whole host of breweries and distilleries, makes Portland an incredible place to imbibe. If you do happen to move somewhere else, you may find yourself wondering where all the local beer and spirits are.
