There’s No Attraction In The World Quite Like This One In Oklahoma
If you know Oklahoma, then you know we have lots of treasures and hidden gems hiding in our state. But there’s one such treasure that is literally hiding in our ground…selenite crystals. Great Salt Plains State Park in Jet, Oklahoma, is the only place in the world where you can dig for these hourglass-shaped crystals. Not only can you find these one-of-a-kind treasures, but you can also enjoy the only lake in Oklahoma that is half saltwater. Grab those shovels and buckets because digging season is right around the corner and you’ll want to visit this attraction that is unlike anything else in the world.
The salt that coats this barren land was left over from an ancient ocean that once existed in Oklahoma. Don't be alarmed if you feel like you stepped onto the moon. Mile after mile of flat, white ground can be found in the digging area...and it's a little eerie.
Oklahoma is the only place in the world where these hourglass shapes form inside these crystals. It forms this way because of the way the sand, sand and water combine together, forming the shape.
A viewing platform is located in the area and provides a great lookout point for the salt plains and for wildlife too. Digging season is from April 1 - October 15, from sun up to sundown.
