The Ancient Town In Oklahoma That’s Loaded With Fascinating History

As the first state capital of Oklahoma, Guthrie is a one-of-a-kind city loaded with fascinating history. As you walk the streets, you are surrounded by gorgeous architecture, charm, personality, and most of all, historical places. Downtown has several businesses and buildings that have been around for more than a century, and you'll want to see them all!

Here's a look at the ancient town everyone should visit.

Guthrie was establish in 1887 as a railroad station, then designated as the Territorial Capital, and finally became the state capital of Oklahoma in 1907 until it moved to Oklahoma City in 1910.

As you walk around downtown you'll find several historical markers telling the history of the locations and their significance in Guthrie.

The downtown area has had ongoing restoration, making it one of the largest Historic Preservation Districts in the country.

Everywhere you go, you find unique and historical things. The First Capital Trolley provides a variety of transportation services in town and is a fun experience to hop on and ride around town. It will definitely take you back in time.

Plus, there's a historic theater that is housed in a building built in 1901. They put on several productions a year that are open to the public, so check the schedule during your visit.

One of the world's largest Masonic temples - The Scottish Rite Temple - is located in Guthrie and you don't want to miss seeing the architecture.

Step inside and you'll be overwhelmed with its beauty. Just look at those breathtaking ceilings.

Guthrie is also overflowing with historical bed and breakfasts housed in charming Victorian-era buildings. If you stay overnight, make sure to book one of them for your stay.

You'll see proud displays of its history as the first capital city of Oklahoma in downtown.

Guthrie's long history is evident in their food scene too. Check out Stables Cafe on 223 North Division Street - one of the most unique places in the state. Their chicken fried steak is insane!

And with all this history, comes a few ghost stories, as well. One of the most haunted places in the state - Stone Lion Inn - is located in a Victorian Mansion that was built in 1907. They host Murder Mystery weekends, and it's an experience unlike any other.
