Almost Nobody Knows That Parts Of An Iconic Movie Were Filmed In This Ohio Town
Ohio has played been a star player in many a silver screen film, with movies like “Shawshank Redemption” and “A Christmas Story” bonafide Buckeye State icons. However, few people know that parts of the iconic movie “Air Force One” were filmed in Ohio, too, with several key scenes playing out at locations across the state.
Mansfield Reformatory is familiar to most film buffs as the location for the hit movie "The Shawshank Redemption," but what some don't know is that this infamous Ohio prison has also appeared in many other movies as well.
The movie tells the story of a group of terrorists who hijack Air Force One and the President's attempt to rescue everyone on board by retaking his plane.
The 1997 film starred Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, and Glenn Close... and the Buckeye State, too! The exterior gates, the east cell block, and central guard room at Mansfield Reformatory were all featured in the film.
Air Force One’s opening scene supposedly takes place in the presidential palace in Kazakhstan -- but viewers with a quick and keen eye will spot Severance Hall in Cleveland standing in for that official government building.

The Cuyahoga County Courthouse, too, makes an appearance, with observant eyes catching a glimpse of Case Western University in the background of these scenes!

Critically acclaimed and easily one of Harrison Ford's most famous roles outside of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, it's pretty darn cool that so many scenes from this celebrated movie took place right here in Ohio!
