Ohio is a mysterious place. Not only does this area account for some unusual historical happenings (like a cross-state UFO chase involving a team of police officers), we’re also next to what is arguably the spookiest of the Great Lakes. With a name like Erie, it’s no wonder that this area purportedly hosts Scooby-Doo’s fictional hometown, though one would not necessarily assume that Scooby-Doo and Cleveland have anything in common.
When A Pup Named Scooby-Doo premiered, we learned that the famously-nomadic Scooby Gang call a quirky town named Coolsville home. This swell place is where the gang grew up, and in Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, we learned that Coolsville is just miles away from Lake Erie’s shore. Prepare to connect with your inner super sleuth, because you just might want to fuel up the Mystery Machine and investigate these eerie communities.
Scooby-Doo is one of the most beloved cartoon canines of all time, and a fairly new installment in the series has permanently tied his story to the Northeast Ohio area.
In Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, a made-for-television installment of the Scooby-Doo live-action series, we receive a unique glimpse into Scooby and his gang’s personal life. The 2010 comedy takes our favorite adventure seekers on a short road trip up to the shores of Lake Erie, where they irritate a witch and indirectly cause her to unleash a horrible monster on the town. (Those meddling kids!)
In the first stages of the movie, we are offered a glimpse into the gang’s life, including a playful road trip scene with images of a local map.
If you have never seen this installment of the live-action Scooby-Doo series, you can find its opening scenes below. You’ll notice that the map they include is, for the most part, true to life. While the beginning points and end points of their road trip are fictional, you might notice that the Mystery Machine passed through our hometown on its road trip.

The town of Coolsville appears to be in the Westfield Center or Seville area of Medina County.
This area is both historic and rural, featuring starkly contrasting farmland and historic features. Westfield is home to a mere 1,000 residents or so, and Seville has around 2,500 residents. While both communities are small, they’re absolutely overflowing with Midwestern charm.
If you head into the Seville area, you just may uncover the very sort of small-town mystery that doubtlessly got Scooby and friends involved in solving mysteries in the first place.
While in town, you may hear rumors of a giant couple and their record-setting giant baby. In this case, the facts are stranger than fiction. Martin and Anna Bates were undoubtedly the tallest people to call this community home. Anna was the taller of the two, standing 7 feet and 11 inches, but her husband’s height was an impressive 7 feet and 7.5 inches. You can learn more about this famous pair here.
The gang ends their journey in the fictional community of Erie Point, which is situated on a little peninsula that reaches out over Lake Erie.
While no such peninsula exists in real life, the proximity of this destination to Mentor and the harbor that appears to carve through the land appears to align most closely with the location of Fairpoint Harbor. Located just about half an hour outside of Cleveland, this scenic community would be the perfect place for Daphne's family to open a country club!
Fairport Harbor, located at Lake Erie and the mouth of the Grand River, is a small community best known for its breathtaking lighthouse and stunning lakefront views.
This picture-perfect community is anything but mysterious. It’s welcoming, gorgeous, and full of maritime fun. One of the coolest attractions in town is a waterfront restaurant with killer views of Lake Erie.
Residents of Greater Cleveland have long known the area to be special and full of surprises, but this one live-action movie reveals that the area is intertwined with the story of our favorite team of truth seekers.
