We love all of the wonderful places within the Cincinnati city limits, but some nearby places are more than worthy of a little road trip. This is a great time of year for a weekend drive, and the next time you're in the mood to hit the road, head east toward Hillsboro and Karnes Orchard. This family is passionate about the land and what they've grown for well over a century, so show them some Cincinnati love and pay them a visit.

Karnes Orchard is a beautiful and historic family farm that can be found east of Cincinnati near Hillsboro.

From downtown, it's about an hour and a half away, but less if you live on the east side of the city. No matter where you live in our area, this orchard near Cincinnati is worthy of a day trip.

The orchard has been in the same family since 1876 and has been a working farm for most of those years.

There was a time when the orchard went dormant, but the current Karnes family owners brought it back to life and have been delighting the community with the sweetest apples and other fruits since 2013.

The orchard and market are open from late July to mid-November and offer both U-pick opportunities and ready-to-buy produce.

You can follow along with them on Facebook, linked below, to find out what U-Pick options they currently have and when. In general, the orchard market is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition to the apples and other fruits grown on the orchard, Karnes makes the most delicious cider.

The apples are picked and pressed right there on the farm and you can taste the fresh quality in every sip.

Tours of the orchard are available - call ahead to inquire about those.

On the tour, you'll get to see how the cider mill works and go behind the scenes of this historic orchard.

And do not leave without picking up some cider to take home with you.

You should probably pack a cooler with some ice and take home as many gallons as you can fit! Bring some cups to enjoy a little on the ride home.

When you visit Karnes Orchard in the fall, expect to find an autumn wonderland, complete with pumpkins.

They don't have a big festival like other farms in the region, but they do have a gorgeous property that is even more scenic during peak fall foliage.
