When you think of a tropical beach with bright blue water, Northern California usually isn’t the first place that comes to mind. Of course, we are home to a plethora of beaches. Too many to count! Although these beaches are stunningly beautiful, they aren’t necessarily considered tropical paradises. Often times they are cold, windy, and rugged (which is just fine by us). However, if you’re in the mood for a little slice of the Caribbean, you’ll be pleased to know you don’t have to travel to the southern region of our state. You can find a little tropical paradise right here in Northern California when you visit this secret beach.
Northern California is full of pristine beaches, but it's the ones that require a little searching for that usually pay off the most. That couldn't be more true when it comes to this secret beach paradise hiding from the public eye.
Gray Whale Cove is a dreamy little slice of tropical heaven in Half Moon Bay. The breathtaking beach is surrounded by gigantic cliffsides that shelter it from view. If you haven't visited this place yet, you'll want to plan a beach trip ASAP.
A steep trail leads you down to the beach so be prepared for lots of stairs. However, it won't be long until you find out that the slightly scary descent is totally worth it.
Once you reach the beach, the first thing that will strike you is the pristine white sand. You can already tell this place is out of the ordinary when it comes to typical Northern California beaches.
The second thing that you're bound to notice is the vibrant blue water. It really does make you feel like you've been transported to the Carribean! The water is a lovely turquoise color that is absolutely mesmerizing. You'll find yourself losing track of time as you gaze in awe at this beautiful shade of blue.
The water is gorgeous but you'll still want to proceed with caution. It may look like it's just begging you to swim in it, but the current is known to be quite dangerous and the temperature far below comfortable for swimming. Still, the view is definitely worth the visit.
Gray Whale Cove is one of the region's best kept secrets. You usually won't find it crowded at all and depending on when you visit you might just have the place to yourself. Surrounded by steep cliffs, this little cove feels far away from civilization and it's absolutely delightful.
There is a small picnic area on the bluff above the beach and gray whales can often be seen close to the shore. Spend the day soaking up the sight of the vibrant blue water and the stunning white sand at one of Northern California's most underrated beaches.
