Sonoma Valley is a pretty amazing region of Northern California. Known for its incredible wine country, the region has a ton to offer when it comes to natural beauty. Jack London State Historic Park is located near Glen Ellen, right on the slope of Sonoma Mountain. The park itself is a historical landmark, containing many incredible artifacts from the past. However, the pure beauty of the park is outstanding.
The park contains a grove of ancient redwoods, one of which is estimated to be up to 1,800-2,000 years old. With the trees towering above you, you'll feel as if you've been transported to some sort of fantastical world.
The park's highlight are the reminders of the days when the land belonged to author Jack London. London bought the property in 1905 and named the area "Beauty Ranch". London remained on the property until his death in 1916. During his time here, he began building what he called "The Wolf House".
Remnants of "The Wolf House" still stand today and visitors can stroll through it. This structure was supposed to become London's new home, but it burned down before he could finish it. What remains are the ruins of the author's passion project.
However, London's main home remains very much intact. Referred to as "The Cottage", visitors of the park can get an up close look at where London wrote his many books.
This gorgeous cottage is a fascinating piece of history for literature enthusiasts. It even contains photos and sketches from the London's personal collection so you can really get a feel for the couple that lived here so long ago.
London and his wife, Charmian, both are buried on the park's property near The Wolf House. It's easy to see why the Londons adored this place so much. The area is absolutely heavenly.
The park is located about 1.5 hours north of San Francisco, between Sonoma and Santa Rosa. You could spend hours upon hours exploring the park's massive 1,400 acres and 20 miles of hiking trails. Like London, you might just find you never want to leave.
