In school, when your teacher caught you daydreaming, they might have said, "Get your head out of the clouds!" While that may have seemed like a bad thing then, it’s an awesome thing now – climbing into the clouds on one of the best hikes in Northern California.
The Emigrant Lake Trail is among over 100 miles of hiking trails located in the Mokelumne Wilderness.
This 105,165-acre rugged expanse soaring up to 10,000-foot peaks is found about an hour south of South Lake Tahoe. The area is so huge it crosses into three counties.
Depending on what time of year you visit, the trailhead markers might be a bit difficult to find.
However, once you get on your way, you’ll encounter some of the most spectacular views in Northern California.
Relaxing seasonal streams pop up all along the way.
These make great places to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch or take some great photos before heading back out on the trail.
Dramatic peaks and rocky volcanic ridges are peppered throughout the Mokelumne Wilderness.
At different times of the year, wildflowers emerge between the trees, providing a multi-hued visual buffet.
Granite outcroppings such as this one in the distance are common.
The overall trail is only about 4-miles long, although it may feel a bit longer while navigating some of the tougher climbing spots. Nevertheless, it is still one of the best hiking spots in the state.
At almost to 9,700-feet high, Emigrant Lake lies at the end of the trail.
You may be a bit out of breath by the time that you arrive, but views like this are well worth the journey!
Rugged peaks, dramatic views, and unparalleled beauty — what else do you need on a wonderful hike into the clouds!
