The Little Missouri State Park In North Dakota Is A Big Secluded Treasure
A visit to North Dakota’s badlands should be on everyone’s bucket list. You could go to the very popular Theodore Roosevelt National Park to get your badlands fix, but if you’d rather be in a more secluded, quiet, and equally beautiful place, this is the spot for you. With stunning vistas, over 45 miles of trail, campgrounds, and more, the Little Missouri State Park is a hidden gem. Here’s what you need to know about this secluded park in North Dakota:
Views like this aren't only seen in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This photograph of the jaw-dropping North Dakota badlands was taken in the Little Missouri State Park, about an hour's drive from the North Unit of the national park.
The Little Missouri State Park is a secluded treasure, located nearly 20 miles from the nearest town. It has everything you could want in a state park and more, with trails, campgrounds, views, and plenty of other things to see and do.
The park is situated right on the edge of Little Missouri River Valley, which created this rugged landscape of colorfully striped hills. You can view them from one of the overlooks at the park - make sure to bring your camera!
These sweeping, panoramic views are unforgettable. They are easily accessible from the park, or you can take a trek on one of the trails that are part of their 45-mile trail system.
The trails are open for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Horseback riding is especially popular here and there are campgrounds with corrals and everything else you'd need for an overnight trail ride.
Whether you're taking a horse through the badlands or navigating it on foot, you'll have no shortage of spectacular sights of the landscape, wildlife, and more. And because it's a lesser-known state park, you won't have to worry about it being busy like the national park might be at peak seasons.
The Little Missouri State Park is open seasonally starting at the beginning of May. You can learn more about the park, campgrounds, and everything else you might need to know by visiting this website.
