Pittsboro is charming any time of year, but autumn is when this town comes alive in North Carolina. Imagine the exciting scenery fall brings framing the farmers' markets, hiking trails, restaurants, shops, and historic structures. Let's take a look at some lovely reasons to visit this small town in the autumn.
1. Fearrington Village
Records of the pastoral Fearrington farm date back to the 1770s. Over the last 40 years, Fearrington Village has flourished, now including about 2,000 residents, with such amenities as several first-class restaurants, an award-winning inn, a spa, boutiques, and acres of beautiful gardens. And it's only about a half-hour from Chapel Hill.
2. The Belted Goat
After you walk the grounds at Fearrington Village, grab breakfast or lunch at The Belted Goat, a casual eatery with great coffee and pastries. Read more on the The Belted Goat Facebook page.
When the fall winds are whirling around, we like to calm the chill through the warmth of the luscious tomato bisque with pesto and grated parmesan garnish.
A side of the triple grilled cheese sandwich has a creamy blend of Comte, Dubliner, and Jarlsberg cheeses on crunchy, buttered sourdough. This delightful pairing comes in a half order too.
3. French Connections
For 23 years, French Connections has offered shoppers an eclectic variety of French antiques, African art, and a large selection of imported fabrics from France and West Africa. It's located in the historic Thompson House (1900) in downtown Pittsboro, and if that's not interesting enough, check out the yard art from Mexico. See more photos on the French Connections Facebook page.
4. Pittsboro Lake Park Trail
It's time for a stroll and some leaf-watching at the 36-acre Town Lake Park, the town's first park.
A fishing pier is available, along with a picnic shelter and grills. Take a stroll on the easy 1.3-mile out-and-back hike as featured on the AllTrails website.
5. The Chatham County Courthouse
This stately historic courthouse, built in 1881 in the late Victorian style, is showcased at the center of town in the traffic circle. It also houses the Chatham Historical Museum where we discover so many interesting facts about Pittsboro and the surrounding area. Read more about the past on the Chatham County Historical Museum Facebook page.
6. Carolina Tiger Rescue
Visit the exquisite Tasha Tiger, one of the most beautiful tigers at Carolina Tiger Rescue which became her new home in 2014. Find out why this sanctuary is so important on the Carolina Tiger Rescue Facebook page.
7. Starrlight Mead
We may have read about mead in our history books, but trying it is a whole other experience. This wine made from honey comes in diverse varieties. Find out more on the Starrlight Mead website.
And while you're there for a mead tasting, take a tour of the beautiful property showing off its vivid colors.
