Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve Park in Raleigh is a little-known scenic spot for fall foliage in North Carolina. The 157 lovely acres of land along Falls Lake is named after Dr. Annie Louise Wilkerson, who left behind important achievements in her 53 years in medicine. The park is a dynamic space, offering exhibits and displays; electric car-charging stations; free equipment to use, such as kites and binoculars; native plant gardens; restrooms and water fountains; and hiking trails. And speaking of trails, let's take a peek at autumn on some of the pretty hikes in and around this preserve.
Three small loop trails have been created on the property, along with the Mountains-to-Sea Connector.
This links the preserve’s trails with the Mountain-to-Sea Trail that follows the south shore of Falls Lake and opens us up to other trails in the area.
The picturesque Ravenridge Mountains to Sea Trail is a 6.8-mile out-and-back trail near Raleigh.
The moderately challenging route is a nice hike along Falls Lake. Start with the sun and find the surprises along the way this trail brings.
Keep your eyes on the roots that can be slippery, especially covered in leaves, while catching some beautiful views of the lake.
And the leaves aren't the only colorful show in town.
Check out some of the nooks and crannies for interesting wildlife, such as this shy little toad camouflaged inside.
This lovely hike is mostly shaded and follows Falls Lake through a nice forest setting.
And the reflection of the vivid hues of fall gives the perfect view.
We love to find autumn along Falls Lake.
Another nearby trail is Epps Forest and Falls Lake Trail, a 3.1-mile out-and-back easy trail.
You'll find the amount of shade here is perfect and the elevation reasonable enough to keep a good pace with plenty of places to stop and look at nature.
And for a longer hike, choose the Falls Dam to Raven Ridge Road.
The 6.2-mile loop trail is a beautiful hike, crossing the creeks and streams. The walk is moderately challenging to easy with some nice rolling hills.
