Sugar Mountain Resort is located in Avery County in the village of Sugar Mountain, next to the quaint mountain town of Banner Elk. It's insanely popular during the winter, when it can seem like half the state shows up to hit the slopes on skis, boards and tubes. But you don't need to be an expert at dodging (or jumping) moguls to find adventure at Sugar Mountain. The vistas alone are worthy of a day trip to just sit and stare at the view.

But, if you're up for a little more activity, then you should head over to the Ski and Snowboarding School where you can sign up for a snowshoe tour. The cost of the tour includes the snowshoes rental, so all you really need is some curiosity and a little stamina.

Snowshoe tours are $25. Each tour lasts one hour and the cost includes your snowshoes rental. Tours are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Adult tours are for ages 12 and over; kids tours are for ages 8-11.
