If you seek a new perspective on life, visit Shortoff Mountain Trail, the best hike near Nebo, North Carolina. The moderately challenging 4.5-mile out-and-back trail can be found at the mountain's base from the Wolfpit parking area, offering unforgettable views of the Linville Gorge Wilderness area. And if you're into primitive camping, there's a spot for you in this wooded wonderland.
This interesting trail takes you through an unmarked portion of the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area and all the beauty you can expect.
To get there, turn right on N.C. Highway 126 E. and drive about six-and-a-half miles to Wolf Pit Road. Turn left and drive to the end of the road where parking is available.
The first portion of the trail is uphill with some steps and rocks to climb.
But that means the downhill route is easier.
The second half of the hike is flat and traces the stunning ridgeline of the mountain.
The views are lovely all the way to the end, including Lake James as it winds through the thick tree groves.
The biggest payoff is the sight at Shortoff Summit where the sky meets the land overlooking the hike's highest elevation of 2,975 feet.
Are you brave enough to sit here on the ledge?
Add in the pretty, colorful leaves which makes it the perfect autumn hike.
We love the crooked trees and some of the stranger parts of the landscape scarred by wildfire damage over the years.
Do yourself a favor and hike up late in the afternoon to watch the dramatic sunset.
Another recommendation is to begin one hour before sunrise for an equally rewarding sight to behold when the dawn brings the light of a new day.
