If you love fried clams - or fried seafood in general - then you're going to love Bigelow's New England Fried Clams in Rockville Centre. People come from all over to visit this very special Long Island restaurant. Dining at Bigelow's is an experience that you'll never forget. Read on to learn more about this tiny establishment that serves the best fried clams you'll ever eat.
Bigelow's Fried Clams doesn't look like much when you drive by or pull into its parking lot, but you'll be amazed by the food and atmosphere here.
Bigelow's opened in 1939. A young man named Russ Bigelow had spent time working in New England seafood restaurants and decided to bring what he learned to a new market. His establishment was an instant local hit and has been one ever since.
Russ Bigelow introduced the Ipswich clam - the soft-shelled clam - to Long Island. Bigelow's still makes its fried clams the way Russ did more than 80 years ago. They're crisp and delicious every time.
This restaurant is quite small inside and it's always busy. Customers can watch the staff make their meal in the open kitchen. The walls are covered with photos and other decor so there's lots to take in while you wait.
Bigelow's recently added an outside seating area which is also quite lovely.
If you sit inside, try to get a seat at the counter for the full experience.
Bigelow's is known for its fried claims first and foremost, but their menu is large and offers many different things.
This crab cake sandwich is another popular item.
You should also try Bigelow's lobster rolls!
The sides are great, too. The coleslaw is excellent and is a perfect complement to any fried dish.
The New England clam chowder is some of the best you'll ever try.
If you prefer Manhattan clam chowder, Bigelow's has that too.
You probably won't have room for dessert, but if you do, try the Hot Apple Crumb, and for even more goodness, get it a la mode.
No matter what, though, be sure to try those fried clams.
No matter where you're coming from, a trip to Bigelow's New England Fried Clams is worth the trip. This restaurant is one that you'll want to come back to time and time again. Bring your friends! Everyone loves Bigelow's!
