Boasting 30,100 acres and enveloping a large amount of the southeast part of the Catskills, Sundown Wild Forest is full of incredible nature. The forest includes multiple ridges and and 10 mountains over 2,000 feet in height. It also has on offer valleys, rivers and even waterfalls.

The Peekamoose Valley in the Sundown Wild Forest is a great area to set up camp. To reserve tent sites, permits are required between May and September.

The Red Fire Tower trail is over one mile long and leads up to an old fire tower that is nearly 900 feet in elevation. It makes for a great view!

Vernooy Kill Falls is one of the more majestic and popular destinations in the forest. In the falls, water drops around 60 feet into multiple small pools and falls. Below the falls, there is a nearly 20 foot stone wall that was part of a mill complex in the 1700s.

The Rondout Creek is the largest fishing area in the forest and is stocked with multiple varieties of trout. Hunting and trapping are also both allowed during the appropriate seasons.

Other trails at the park are used for snowmobiling and equestrian purposes. Other trails are suitable for mountain biking. If you have an outdoorsy passion, there is a decent chance Sundown can facilitate it!
