The Underrated New York Campground Where You Can Dig For Your Own Diamonds
Ready to learn something new for the day? Well, the state of New York is home did more than fifteen
thousand campsites! With a variety of campgrounds and scenic getaways available to you, sometimes it’s hard to choose where you’ll be spending your nights under the stars. If you’ve been looking for a campground that offers more than your average park and even comes with a great deal of adventure, then look no further because Crystal Grove Diamond Mine will be your new favorite place to go camping in the Empire State.
In the small town of St. Johnsville where you're just over an hour away from places like Syracuse, Lake George, and Albany, you can find quite literally a hidden gem.
Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground is one of only a few campgrounds within New York State where you can go digging for diamonds.
For an adventure like this, you'll need typical gear such as sturdy shoes, gloves, protective eyewear, digging tools, buckets, and bags to hold your crystals — all of which are things that you can find in the camp store.
Once you have all your equipment, you can explore the Herkimer Diamond Mines and let the fun begin.
Some will be lucky enough to find loose crystals in the dirt, while others will have to do a bit of digging to find something shiny in the rough.
More than just a diamond mine adventure, at Crystal Grove you can actually go camping too!
At their campground, you'll find a total of five cabins that are available to rent between the months of April and October.
One cabin can hold six guests, while the other four can hold four guests — each one filled with rustic charm.
Inside the cabins, you'll find that things are beautifully kept...
...with beds, a small dining table, front porch, fire ring, and picnic table outside.
Another thing we love about this mine and campground is the fact that the Timmerman Creek runs right through it!
For those who are tent or RV camping, you'll find yourself staying at secluded campsites underneath the shaded forest that are absolutely ideal.
Hosting Family Fun Days, Basket Weaving Workshops, Foraging Classes, Tie-Dye Classes, and so much more — stop into Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground for an outdoor adventure that your entire family will always remember.
