Only 40 miles from New York City, Harriman State Park is the perfect destination if you’re looking to make a brief escape from the city. The park, which is the second-largest in the state, contains more than 200 miles of hiking trails, more than 30 lakes and reservoirs, camping areas, and more. With around 100 trails to choose from, it’s an explorer’s dream, featuring adventurous hikes with a wide range of distances and difficulty.

More than 30 lakes and reservoirs throughout the park are a welcome sight for weary explorers. Try the Lichen Trail, which offers hikers some breathtaking lakeside views. Destinations like Lake Kanawauke or Lake Sebago, the park's largest lake, are perfect spots to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.
As fall is fast approaching, there’s never been a better time to head out into a gorgeous state park, especially one that has more than 47,000 acres to explore. Some of the trails are even open to cross-country skiers come winter. If you’re looking for a short drive from New York City and endless miles to roam, this park is your best bet.
