One of the best things about living in New York is that not only do we have some of the most amazing outdoor attractions that you can experience in the entire country, but we’re also home to a wide variety of regions that each bring something different to the table. Up north our Adirondack region is known for being the place where you can find the tallest mountains in our state, but it’s down in the Gunks where you can enjoy activities like first-rate rock climbing that will blow your mind.
Ready to have the time of your life? Then pack your bags and grab your favorite hiking boots, because the town of New Paltz is going to bring out the explorer in you!
The Shawangunks Mountains AKA the Gunks, are recognized as being one of the best places to go rock climbing in our country.
Between the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park Preserve, there are an endless amount of climbing options for true adventurers. The unbelievable scenery provided by the Gunks makes for a climbing experience that you'll never forget, keeping you coming back to New Paltz for more every season. Most climbers will take advantage of this region from roughly April through November, with some of our more daring residents continuing to climb well into December even when there's snow.
Another adventure that's worth taking in New Paltz? Enjoying a getaway to the Mohonk Mountain House!
Right in the middle of some of the most gorgeous scenery that you'll find in this area of New York, the Mohonk Mountain House is one of our many historic resorts that's more than worthy of your time. The luxurious getaway is the perfect place for any adventurer to stay during a trip to New Paltz, giving you access to a beautiful lake and mind-blowing hiking trails.
The adventures are endless at this spectacular resort!
Open from Memorial Day through September, guests of the Mohonk Mountain House can go swimming in the lake as well as enjoy other water activities like kayaking, rowing, paddle boating and more! There's nothing wrong with wanting to get out on the water, but it's the hiking trails here that will truly win over your heart.
Accessible from the resort, you can put your fear of small spaces to test while trying out one of New York's most insane hikes, the Lemon Squeeze. The 5-mile long hike ends with soaking in the views from the Sky Top Tower, but not before you literally squeeze yourself through teeny crevices!
If you decide you don't want to explore all that the Mohonk Mountain House has to offer, then no worries! There's still much more to be seen in New Paltz.
An adventure you'll fall in love with, exploring the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is an absolute must. The over 20-mile long linear park is considered to be one of our country's most iconic rail trails, bringing you through remote areas and even over various bridges like the one seen pictured above.
Another adventurous area to explore in town? Try taking a trip to the Nyquist-Harcourt Wildlife Sanctuary! The wildlife sanctuary features over 50-acres of land where you'll be able to see various wildlife and plants that will leave you speechless.
Would an adventure in New York really be a true adventure if it didn't involve wine at one point or another?
Right in town you'll be able to top off your adventures with the perfect beverages at Robibero Family Vineyards! Open Thursday through Monday from 11AM until 6PM, the local vineyard has now been a favorite place to adventure to for nearly ten years. Open all throughout the year, the vineyard sits on over 40-acres of land and is a friendly, family operated business.
What’s your favorite place to explore while you’re visiting New Paltz? There are so many adventures to be taken in the lower regions of our state, less than an hour south of New Paltz, you can find One Of The Most Beautiful Hikes In New York in the town of Garrison!
