That summer heat is slowly creeping in, meaning now is the perfect time to start planning out your potential escape for cooler temperatures. If a lazy day on the water sounds like the perfect activity for the dog days of summer, you’ll want to check out one of these New Mexico State Parks that are home to lakes, rivers, and swimming holes.
Located right off Highway 64, Cimarron Canyon State Park is one beautiful part with options for hiking, fishing, and camping. It follows the Cimarron River, so you can easily enjoy views along the river.
The Pecos River runs through this state park, creating a lovely scene for anyone looking to spend some time in nature. The river and trails are shaded by towering cottonwood trees, so you can enjoy an afternoon of fishing or walking along the river's edge.
This state park is hidden away in a tiny town called Guadalupita. This is the perfect spot to visit when you're looking to escape the noise of the city for a peaceful getaway along Coyote Creek.
When the heat in the late summer is bearing down on all of us, one perfect mountain getaway is to Hyde Memorial State Park. This park follows a portion of Little Tesuque Creek, so you can enjoy the waterside views during your hike.
Another state park located in small-town New Mexico is Morphy Lake State Park. Located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the lake is a lovely hidden gem where you can enjoy boating or fishing.
This state park sits right along the New Mexico-Colorado border, with various creeks and two small lakes: Lakes Alice and Maloya. Enjoy the mountainous views while fishing or boating across the lakes.
