Deception Peak and Lake Peak trail is challenging hike in Santa Fe National Forest. It’s perfect for hikers who want to push themselves a little.

At about six and a half miles out and back, this trail is definitely one that will have you feeling the burn. But trust us – those sore calves will be totally worth it for the views.

You’ll start on relatively flat footing, but the terrain quickly soars upwards. Expect to encounter some steep elevation gain and uneven ground.

Hikers should be prepared to scramble over boulders and walk along some narrow paths. As you start to get above the tree line, however, the views you’ll encounter will make you forget any discomfort.

This trail takes you to Deception and Lake peaks, giving you incredible views of Nambe Lake. The trees below seem to stretch out forever and the cool breezes will refresh you as you hike.

Even if you tackle this trail on a warm day, be sure to bring a sweater or jacket. The temperature drops sharply as you gain elevation. You should also plan on bringing lots of water and snacks.

All you have to do to get back to your starting point is turn around, but be sure to take the same path you came from. Hikers have reported that it’s easy to accidentally take a different trail back from the peak.
