New Jersey isn’t known for its skiing. We haven’t had a wide selection of great ski towns over the years (think Telluride and Stowe) but we do have Vernon. Thousands of visitors flock to Mountain Creek each year, many overlooking the town it calls home. You may be surprised to learn that Vernon has more to offer than the Burger King on NJ-94. Here are a few reasons to take a trip to Vernon.

Are there things to do in winter in New Jersey?

When most people think of New Jersey, sunny summer days at the shore come to mind. However, if you know where to look (and how to dress!), winter may be the very best season in the Garden State. Our gorgeous state parks are nearly empty, and it's easy to avoid snow just by watching the forecast. There's nothing quite like a hike in the Delaware Water Gap on a warm and mild winter day. If you're someone who loves snow, though, you'll be pleased to know that New Jersey has ski resorts, sledding hills, and even a Cross Country Ski center! For great alpine skiing, head to Mountain Creek. If you want to try snowshoeing and cross country skiing, High Point Monument is the place to go! You can even rent snowshoes and nordic skis from the High Point Cross Country Center, right across from the state park's office.

Where can you go for a ski trip in or around New Jersey?

New Jerseyans are lucky to live so close to great ski slopes. Of course, our very own Mountain Creek in Vernon tops our list of favorites. If you want to travel a bit and try something new, though, head to the Poconos! In Pennsylvania's eastern mountains, you can ski world-class resorts like Camelback, or quiet, family-friendly spots like Bear Creek. Big Boulder is perfect for snowboarders and park skiers, and Shawnee is a hidden gem. All of these Poconos resorts are located close to the New Jersey/Pennsylvania border! If you would rather head north, Hunter Mountain in New York is a short drive from northern New Jersey and offers plenty of amenities, including multiple peaks of terrain on a fantastic mountain ridge.
