New Jersey is a small state, but it's amazing how much open space there is when you know where to find it. Some of the best spots in the Garden State for quiet relaxation are county roads, and one of my favorites is County Route 539. Taking you through the Pine Barrens in South Jersey, it's often referred to as New Jersey's loneliest road. It can get eerie at night, sure, but during the day it's uniquely peaceful. In fact, we think it's one of the best scenic drives in New Jersey. Heading from Cranbury to Tuckerton, it passes through many laid-back enclaves along the way - including Whiting. Whiting is an unincorporated community with a lot of small-town charm, and it's worth a stop. Some of the best things to do in Whiting, NJ include a meal at an old-school Italian restaurant and a visit to one of the state's most unique parks.
It can feel like there's nothing for miles around when you're driving down County Road 539 - and there's something relaxing about that.
Along the way, you'll pass through many small towns and have the opportunity to stop for food or supplies.
However, for much of the drive, it'll be nothing but rolling farmland on both sides.
That changes once you arrive in Whiting, NJ - a perfect place to spend a few hours on your ride.
This is where you'll find Nonna's Place, an old-school Italian joint that feels like a visit to grandma's.
The pizza, pasta, garlic knots, and daily specials here are all worth the calories, and how!
The town is also home to a small park featuring a beautiful and peaceful World War II memorial.
In addition to the memorials, the park is home to several vintage WW2 vehicles and even a unique military-themed playground!
