When it comes to barbecue, New Jersey has plenty of options. It's not hard to find a great restaurant near you but it's always fun to discover someplace new. One of my favorite things to do is unearth hidden gems in the Garden State, especially when those gems are delicious! I recently came across a Pine Barrens eatery that you'll want to check out.
U.S. 206 runs from Dingman Township, PA to Hammonton, NJ.
While it traverses through cities like Princeton and Trenton, a good chunk of the road is quite rural - particularly in Sussex County and then south of Bordentown. When you get into the Pinelands, there are more trees and less businesses, but there are a few.
One of these businesses is an inconspicuous little shack - Christine's House of Kingfish Barbecue.
Just minutes from Wharton State Forest, it's a great stop for hikers and campers. It's surrounded by towering pines and there's not another restaurant in sight.
This unassuming spot serves up some spectacular barbecue.
Tender, juicy and full of flavor, the BBQ ribs practically slide off the bone. The sauce is just as mouthwatering as the meat and you can buy it by the gallon (or quart). They also serve chicken, pulled pork, fish and sides like baked beans and cole slaw.
The staff is friendly and welcoming.
In addition to great food, you can expect great service. After you order your meal, dine in the cozy dining room or outdoors, when the weather allows. They also offer catering for parties and professional events.
Not just off the beaten path, they're off the world wide web. They don't have a website or massive following on social media but the food speaks for itself. The dozens of reviewers on sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor don't hurt, either. Customers rave about the staff, atmosphere and amazing meals. It might not seem like much from the outside but you won't want to miss it. So, head out to the Pine Barrens and enjoy some of the best barbecue in New Jersey. You'll find Christine's House of Kingfish Barbecue at 926 Route 206, Shamong, open Thursday-Sunday. It's actually right down the road from one of New Jersey's best wing joints, which you can learn about here.
