When hungry people think about New Hampshire, they might imagine seafood or other quintessential New England fare. But the reality is that we have tons of other unique options. That means whatever it is you’re craving, there’s a good chance you’ll find it nearby. If it’s Vietnamese food you want, you’ll find some of the best hidden in a little shop in Portsmouth.
If you've driven past Darleen's Subs & Pizza in Portsmouth you may have imagined chowing down on a great sandwich filled with meatballs or any variety of deli meat. It may have even caused you to stop and walk in to place an order. While we can't deny this stuff is great, there's another lesser-known reason to stop.
There are actually two great shops inside! In addition to Darleen's subs you'll also find Nikki's Banh Mi. This little shop serves some of the best Vietnamese sandwiches and dishes we've ever tasted outside of Hanoi.
But, first. What's is a banh mi sandwich? Traditionally served in a French roll, you'll have your choice of Bulgogi marinated beef or chicken, or Lemongrass Pork. It's then topped with fresh pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, cucumber, and their homemade sriracha aioli.
You'll find this simple sandwich being sold off the back of bicycles in some Vietnamese cities, making it an easy and delicious meal on-the-go. And that's just what you'll find here, too.
We also love just how simple it is to enjoy your meal. There are a mix of booths and tables here, all equipped with the condiments you'll need to make these meals your own.
