Londonderry was once referred to as “Nutfield” because of the dense nut trees surrounding the area. While the area may be now mostly known for its apple orchards, the town has many claims of fame.
He was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, and became widely known for his time as a Major General in Continental Army during the American Revolution. New Hampshire’s official state motto “Live Free or Die” was written by Stark on July 31, 1809.
There are four villages that make up the small town: Hillsborough Bridge Village, Hillsborough Center, Hillsborough Upper Village, and Hillsborough Lower Village.
Most notable is the Franklin Pierce Homestead, home to the fourteenth President of the United States, Franklin Pierce. He was born in 1804 and raised in the Pierce homestead in Hillsborough until he went off to attend Bowdoin College.
