One Of The State’s Best Restaurants Is Hiding Inside A Nebraska Truck Stop
Nebraska isn’t exactly known as a hub of fine international cuisine, but there are a few ethnic food restaurants out there that rival those in any other state. One of them is hiding in the most unlikely place we can imagine: a truck stop off of I-80 at exit 248.
Pull off of the interstate at the Overton exit and you'll immediately see the yellow and white Jay Bros. truck stop. It looks a little old and you might even question whether it's still open. But pull into the parking lot and you'll see that this place is still very much in business.
When you walk into the convenience store area, it looks like any other convenience store you might find along the interstate in any little town...with one difference. The intoxicating aromas of an authentic Indian kitchen waft out to tantalize you. That would be Taste of India, the surprisingly fantastic restaurant tucked into this truck stop.
The restaurant area looks a lot like any other truck stop restaurant. It's not fancy, but you aren't here for the ambiance or for frilly decorations. You're here to experience some of the most delicious Indian cuisine you've ever tasted.
Everything is made fresh to order by a chef who immigrated from India. This is probably the most authentic Indian food experience you'll find in Nebraska...and it's definitely the best food you'll eat in a truck stop restaurant in Nebraska.
If you've ever had the pleasure of eating authentic Indian cuisine in other parts of the world, you'll be able to appreciate just how exquisite these freshly prepared dishes are.
Just looking at these samosas is making my mouth water. When you're traveling through the area, Jay Bros/Taste of India is a welcome little oasis of tastiness that will leave you dreaming about the perfectly spiced food for weeks.
If you happen to live in the area, you can even call ahead to have a take-out order waiting for you when you arrive. But good luck trying to make it all the way home with all that delicious food without pulling over and digging in.
Taste of India gets consistently high reviews, and their garlic naan is a particular favorite. The food is really something quite remarkable, especially considering the unassuming building you’ll find it in.
