Most of us prefer to explore our beautiful state in the summer when everything is green and the weather is warm and sunny. But don’t overlook the benefits of an autumn day trip. The colors are magnificent, the temperatures are cooler, and the time is just right for experiencing a spooky ghost town.

The ghost town of St. Deroin is located within Indian Cave State Park in southeastern Nebraska. It‘s located a short way from the park entrance, and you can drive right up to it.

The town was founded in 1854 and was home to a popular ferry crossing. At its height, it had around 200 residents and boasted 20 businesses.

The Missouri River, which had given life to the town, also spelled its demise. When the river changed course, the ferry could no longer operate.

The loss of the ferry business and a series of floods also contributed to St. Deroin‘s downfall.

Today, a few buildings remain (some original, others reconstructed), along with two cemeteries. In the summer season, living history events are held often in the town.

But now, in the fall, you‘re likely to find nothing but peace and quiet. Wander through the cemeteries for a unique, slightly spooky experience, or just explore the silent town and picture what it was like generations ago.
