We don't think we're biased when we say that Nebraska's lakes are the most beautiful and peaceful in the nation. Take this Panhandle recreation area with crystal clear water for example. It's sometimes overlooked for the larger lakes nearby, but it's one you definitely don't want to miss. In fact, it may just be one of the best lakes in Nebraska. See for yourself...
Located at the northwestern corner of the city of Bridgeport, Bridgeport State Recreation area covers about 200 acres.
About 78 of those acres are water, which is spread out over five sandpit lakes.
The site was a sand and gravel extraction area in the 1930s. It was later built up as a recreation area and is now managed by Nebraska Game & Parks.
Although it's small, this recreation area is popular with locals and visitors who enjoy the tranquility of nature and the company of other outdoor enthusiasts.
One of the things you'll notice about the water here is that it's clean and clear. Doesn't that look inviting?
You can often see fish swimming in the beautifully clear water. Can you spot the fish beneath the surface in the picture below?
One section of sandy beach on the south side of Center Lake is set aside for swimming (no lifeguard is on duty), and this refreshing water is the perfect place to be on a hot summer day.
Several species of fish are stocked here, and anglers can expect to go home with a decent haul.
Boating is another popular activity here, though there are some restrictions. Powered boats are only allowed on the largest lake, Center Lake, and must adhere to a 5 MPH speed limit. In the other lakes, non-powered vessels are welcome.
But don't forget to just sit back and enjoy the area's beauty. Stroll the wooded grounds, gaze out at the water, and enjoy a break from the more hectic parts of life.
If you aren't ready to go home at the end of the day, just pitch your tent and set up camp for the night. The park only offers primitive camping, though there are toilets and water available.
Whether you're here only for an afternoon...
...or choose to extend your stay overnight, Bridgeport SRA is a lovely, underrated place to get out and enjoy Nebraska.
