The midwest is known for terrific fresh food, and Wisconsin is the epicenter of American cheesemaking. You don't have to travel all the way to the Dairy State for the freshest Wisconsin cheese, though. There's a little shop right here in Nebraska that brings it right to us.
Northwoods Cheese Haus opened in Papillion in late 2014. It's a tiny, unassuming building on 84th Street. If you weren't paying attention, you'd think it was just a funky little house.
But it's holding untold treasures: cheese, sausage, crackers, gifts, crafts, and lots of delightful bits and bobs. Despite the shop's diminutive size, it holds a rich and widely varied inventory.
The store was modeled to look like a building in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. In fact, all of the wood and fixtures making up the interior were brought in from Wisconsin. That's true dedication!
Likewise, the products for sale here all hail from Wisconsin. The cheese is shipped fresh weekly, so anything you choose is likely to have been on the farm no more than a few days ago.
The owners are friendly and knowledgeable and always willing to help explain the difference between cheese varieties or make suggestions based on your tastes.
Of course, the store is located in Nebraska, so there are some Nebraska touches. Don't worry, though - the cheeses inside these adorable Cornhusker-themed waxes are the same quality Wisconsin products you'll find elsewhere in the store.
After seeing the success of the Northwoods Cheese Haus, the owners added on another facet to the business. Just a few steps up the hill from the Cheese Haus is The Stave, a tasting room and live music venue that's the perfect complement to the tiny, serene cheese shop. It is, of course, located in a little house. The patio out back has quickly become a favorite spot for live music.
Northwoods Cheese Haus is located at 310 N Washington St, Papillion, NE 68046. For more information, visit the Facebook pages for Northwoods Cheese Haus and The Stave.
