Some places just seem magical, don’t they? This whimsical little cafe in Omaha’s historic Benson district aims to put a little more magic – along with coffee, cocktails, and snacks – into everyone’s life. And once you visit, you may find you can’t resist visiting again and again.
Edge of the Universe opened in 2020 with a unique idea. The owners wanted to create a space that wouldn't just serve drinks and nibbles - it would also serve up a fun, frequently-changed motif.
The cafe is used as a community space where local artists and nonprofit organizations receive the recognition and exposure they deserve. It's also a place to gather with friends, both those you've known forever and those you've yet to meet.
As for the unusual name, the cafe's website explains it all: "Because no one is alien at the edge of the universe. So come as you are or as you'd like to be."
This unique concept comes to life through its whimsical and artistic themes. Every few months, a new one is selected. A local artist - a different one each time - comes in to help make that theme a reality.
Some of the cafe's rotating themes include Starry Starry Night (which is ongoing as of the time of publication), Hawaiian Surf Schack, and End of the Rainbow.
Fun events are a regular occurrence here. You can stop in for movie night, trivia, bingo, and even unexpected experiences like campfire night, which featured open mic ghost story-telling.
But don't forget that this community space is, first and foremost, a cafe. You can expect the menu items to be just as whimsical and wonderful as the theme around you.
The standard coffee and other hot and cold drinks are thoughtfully prepared and highly reviewed.
The themed cocktails are wonderfully unique inventions that have names and ingredients to reflect the current surrounding motif. There are some very interesting concoctions on the ever-changing menu, so we highly recommend frequent visits.
Baked goods are sourced from local businesses and can accommodate gluten-free and vegan diets - good news for those who have a hard time finding such items at other cafes.
You definitely don't want to pass up the chance to try a boozy malt-shake. Made in your favorite flavors, these shakes have a little grown-up kick to them that you're going to love.
If you get extra hungry while you're sipping your drinks, you can order one of these absolutely gorgeous charcuterie boards. There's a small one, a large one, and something called a "beast board" that can feed a whole crowd.
If whimsy and merriment make your life complete, you're going to love a visit to this incomparable establishment. Just be sure to bring a sense of childlike wonder and a thirst for delicious drinks.
