An oasis is a fertile patch in a desert-like area that is able to support vegetation due to its supply of water. Vedauwoo (Vee-dah-voo), known by residents but not as well-known by visitors, is a little oasis located on Pole Mountain in southeastern Wyoming. Located in higher elevations, it rises above the desert-like plains of eastern Wyoming and is made up of interesting rock formations, scattered trees and sources of water. It offers a welcome respite from the surrounding hot plains. Vedauwoo was known to the Arapaho Indians as the "Land of the Earthborn Spirit."
Vedauwoo is part of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest and the land is made up of granite rock and sandy soil which produces some hardy vegetation. The rock formations attract climbers, hikers and campers. The rocks are large boulders that are made out of Sherman Granite. Vedauwoo is also made up of an oasis of wildflowers. Early season wildflowers can be viewed in April or May. Peak flowering usually occurs in June and July. Some of the area wildflowers include daisies, biscuitroots, bluebells, locoweeds, phlox and goldenrod. Most of the wildflowers are deep rooted perennials that are acclimated to grow in exposed hillsides such as the flowers pictured.

Cedar Creek Trail (also called Cedar Basin Trail) spans over 7 miles, winding through a stunning mix of spruce groves and evergreen forests, with the gentle sounds of Cedar Creek bubbling nearby. The initial easy ascent offers a perfect opportunity to appreciate the spectacular foliage, and hikers will be treated to thousands of aspens glowing in brilliant yellows and oranges, especially in mid-October when the colors are at their peak. We love an easy hike that doesn't skimp on scenic rewards!
While this gorgeous fall hike may not offer direct views of the Tetons, it provides its own breathtaking vistas as it traverses the Salt River Range. One of the prettiest spots is the designated overlook that reveals expansive views of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Here, valleys stretch below, framed by distant peaks that hint at winter's approach with their light dusting of snow. It’s the perfect spot to pause, take a deep breath, and soak in the seasonal beauty. After all, that's what you're here for!
However, the trail also runs parallel to Cedar Creek Canyon, which means the challenge ramps up as you continue the journey. But rest assured, those switchbacks will pale in comparison to the warm, technicolor hues that will engulf you on all sides. Leafy, deciduous tree tunnels bring to mind the show-stopping colors of the East Coast, but a million times better.
You'll also encounter a few water crossings along the way, but in fall, these should be relatively shallow. Nevertheless, it wouldn't hurt to come prepared with waterproof shoes.

Officially, the full trail is rated as difficult, clocking somewhere between 7 to 9 miles. However, the pretty overlook mentioned above is only a mile or so in and is the perfect turnaround point if you're not in the market for an all-day hike. However, if you keep going, you'll have the opportunity to bask in the secluded beauty of an alpine lake, traverse some picturesque open marshes dotted with late-season wildflowers, and take on a little bit of scrambling to go with your water crossings. The challenges are oh-so worth it!
Some things to note before you head out: there is a decent amount of parking at the trailhead, but peak times can be crowded. Mountain bikes and horses share this trail but you'll be blissfully free of motorized traffic! Trekking poles can definitely come in handy, especially after rainfall, as the rocks can be slick. Take care to avoid excessively muddy portions to preserve the trail and pay close attention to the weather on hiking day — early snowfall has a way of showing up when you least expect it! And did we mention the bears and mountain lions? Seriously, stay alert, even as you snap endless photos.

While Yellowstone National Park may not boast the dense, legendary foliage of New England, America's first national park is nevertheless prime for fall adventuring. Sprawling over 207,000 acres, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is a treasure trove for avid outdoorsmen. Year-round, the gorge is aptly named due to the fiery hues of the canyon walls. But come fall, the landscapes surrounding the gorge come alive with color as well, lighting up with warm golds and brushed orange. In the canyon proper, it's a spectacular sight made all the more dramatic by the crimson formations in the background!
5. Pinedale
Most often known for its small town charm and abundance of winter activities, Pinedale's scenic setting at the foot of the Wind River Range means endless opportunities to enjoy Wyoming's fall colors. In the distance, the iconic Squaretop Mountain towers nearly 4,000 feet above a sea of fiery golds and oranges, while a multitude of spectacular trails (both hiking and ATV) wind through Bridger-Teton National Forest to offer glorious pops of color amidst the evergreens. This fantastic geologically carved sculpture park is a one-of-a-kind natural wonder. And, thanks to the abundance of aspens and red-leaf foliage growing alongside the towering rock formations, Vedauwoo is also a treasure trove of fall color as well! The closer to sunset you can get here, the better as the lighting illuminates the clouds, rocks, and warm-hued foliage to perfection. Nearby Laramie boasts its own foliage as well. The Black Hills are a dreamy place to experience fall in Wyoming. 8. Tongue River Canyon

9. Sinks Canyon State Park
Sinks Canyon State Park is a geologic marvel. This rugged canyon at the base of the southern Wind River Mountains, the legendary "Sinks" is where the Popo Agie river vanishes underground near the mouth of the canyon after flowing across the Lander Valley. This region is incredibly diverse ecologically - moving from sagebrush and juniper flatlands up into vibrant, rolling foothills and dense forests, all the way up to stunning alpine landscapes. The 47-mile stretch of Cloud Peak Skyway Scenic Byway (U.S. 16) borders the Bighorn National Forest and stretches from Ten Sleep to Buffalo. Wyoming has its fair share of iconic drives around the state, from the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway to the Devil's Tower Scenic Byway and everything in between. The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway runs 45 miles across Western Montana, linking Cody with the Beartooth Highway and the Northeast Gate of Yellowstone National Park. Along the way, you'll cross the Sunlight Creek Bridge, the tallest bridge in the state. But it's the views from up here that will bowl you over!
