There's something about the Christmas season that makes us want to travel back to simpler times. Nostalgia hangs heavy and we find enjoyment in the kind of entertainment that people loved a hundred years ago or more. Spending time with loved ones, finding ways to relax, and slowing things down a bit are some of the best parts of the holiday season. One of the most gorgeous ways to do that is to head out for a sleigh ride in Wisconsin. There's just something magical about venturing out into pristine areas undisturbed by cars. Way up north in Birchwood, about 75 miles north of Eau Claire, you'll find one of the best sleigh rides you could ever imagine. Far from the simple rides in towns over the holidays, this sleigh ride lasts 90 minutes and heads out into the gorgeous Northwoods area surrounding the small town. This isn't a novelty ride, but a long and fabulous way to experience this wonderful winter tradition.
On Twin Lakes is a lovely complex up in Birchwood. These folks host weddings and events in a rustic, unique setting. The farm has been in this family for four generations, dating back to 1939 when it was started as dairy farm.
This farm has more than 400 acres of farmland, prairie and trails to explore. The owners discovered the appeal of their simple, beautiful farm when their sons both got married on site in the big barn on the hill. That convinced the owners that all the wonderful things they enjoy about their farm appeal to others, as well, and they've since added all kinds of opportunities to relax and unwind on the farm.
One of the best ways to explore this farm is on a sleigh.
According to the On Twin Lakes website, "Over the course of your 90 minute (approx.) ride, your teams of haflinger horses will bring you and your guests though a variety of vistas. Up and down hills, in and out of the 300+ acres of woods, along lakes and ponds you'll ride. Keep your eyes peeled, there are often animals to see: deer, squirrels, owls, bald eagles, and turkeys are common sightings on a ride in addition to our Oreo cows. Singing is strongly encouraged, especially near Christmas time. We usually need to rest the horses during the ride, so we stop for hot cocoa and warm up by the fire while the horses catch their breath."
This is a truly stunning way to experience Wisconsin in winter when the cool wind puts roses on your cheeks and you get to fall in love with the simple beauty of bare trees and snow-covered ground. It's one of the best winter outdoor activities in Wisconsin.
The folks here don't take themselves too seriously - their farm is home to a wiffle ball field in the summer - and that playfulness is part of what makes these rides so fun. This is family-friendly fun, with laughing and singing encouraged. The owners want to become a part of your family holiday tradition.
This is one of the holliest, jolliest ways you can celebrate the holidays. Unplug for a few hours and get your family talking and laughing together on this fabulous sleigh ride in Wisconsin. More than just a quick jaunt across town, this ride lasts for so long the horses have to take a break partway through! It's a full sleigh ride experience and one of the most magical things to do in winter in Wisconsin.
You'll love life from this vantage point and wonder why you hadn't gone on a ride at On Twin Lakes before. This farm family is a bit of an institution in this area and there's something wonderful about joining your Christmas traditions with yours. You won't regret taking this trip with your family and loved ones.
On Twin Lakes provides blankets and hot cocoa to help ward off the chill, but riders should dress in layers and for the weather since you're outside for 90 minutes on this awesome ride.
