You Have to Experience This Stunning Lakeside Hike in Wisconsin for Yourself
Discover Wisconsin's rugged Lake Michigan shoreline on this quick, scenic trail.
What’s better than a hike with breathtaking views, unique terrain, and a bit of wildlife? The trails at Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve along Wisconsin’s rocky Lake Michigan shoreline offer just that and more. To get a taste of everything the 73-acre scenic reserve showcases, start with the short but sweet Lion’s Den Trail.

Some might find Wisconsin’s lower east shore surprising. For some, Grafton might not be the first outdoor destination to come to mind, but it's home to an almost unexpected amount of natural beauty. The area is home to open, rolling grasslands that seem to stretch endlessly, rocky, tree-lined bluffs, and of course, the strikingly turquoise waters of Lake Michigan. Lion’s Den Gorge is a perfect spot to take it all in—between panoramic views and diverse ecosystems, visitors have an abundance of exciting features to enjoy.
Lion’s Den Trail—one of the most popular hikes in the preserve—is just over two miles long, making it a relatively quick trek. Thanks to its gentle terrain and wide, flat paths, AllTrails considers the loop both easy and accessible. Its wheelchair-and-stroller-friendly features make it a great destination for the whole family—and yes, you can even bring the dog!

During your hike, you’ll experience plenty of sights and sounds that will surely make the day one to remember. Visitors will begin their journey on a low-lying boardwalk over a grassy marsh, where the possibility of spotting a heron or a loon isn’t out of reach. Quickly, the boardwalk gives way to the wide, dirt path that weaves throughout the densely wooded forest. In the spring and summer, the vivid colors of the native wildflowers will easily catch your eye—it’s hard to miss the bursts of red, yellow, and purple along the route’s edge. As you wander closer to the lake, you’ll catch glimpses of the almost unnaturally blue water, glistening under the afternoon sun.

Don’t forget to stop for a snack! Eventually, you’ll run into a scenic lookout with a few picnic tables and an excellent view of Lake Michigan. If you’re looking to extend your adventure, you can follow the nearby stairs down to the shore. Here, you can listen to the relaxing sound of the waves, skip rocks, search for treasures like beach glass, or simply take in the lake's raw beauty. In my experience, hearing the birds singing amongst the quiet chatter of fellow hikers is hard to beat.

Luckily, visiting this park is pretty simple. There are no fees to enter the preserve, and the asphalt parking lot is usually easy to navigate. If you’re planning your trip on a summer weekend, arriving early is well worth the extra effort to guarantee a good parking spot. I went on a Monday in mid-May and was able to catch plenty of quiet moments, so a weekday trip might be the best option for a more secluded experience.
While the spring and summer are the most popular times to hike Lion’s Den, the fall and winter seasons can offer unforgettable experiences, too—just be sure to take extra caution and be prepared for more unpredictable weather and terrain.
After a productive day on the trail, don’t be afraid to explore some more. Lion’s Den Gorge and the surrounding area are home to plenty of additional trails, parks, picnic spots, and yummy eats. To end your trip on a sweet note, you can stop at one of the many local ice cream shops in the nearby town of Port Washington. Frankie’s Ice Cream and The Chocolate Chisel are both highly recommended!
