Climb A Natural Rock Staircase Into The Clouds On The Devil’s Staircase On Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail

Devil’s Staircase in Janesville, Wisconsin offers a challenging yet rewarding hike with scenic views and natural stone stairs.

Some of the best hikes in Wisconsin take just a bit of effort. In Janesville, a rocky climb takes adventurous hikers to new heights. The name might seem a little bit intimidating – it’s called the Devil’s Staircase. But if you’re brave enough to take this staircase on, you’ll be rewarded with a hike like no other. Here’s what’s waiting for you on the Devil’s Staircase Trail in Wisconsin...

The Devil’s Staircase is a segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, a 1,000-mile footpath that winds through much of Wisconsin. The Ice Age Trail traces the edge of the last glacier and it travels over some rugged terrain.

This trail segment is no exception. It’s located in Janesville, along the Rock River. It’s less than two miles long, but it’s not an easy hike.

The trail is only for foot traffic – it’s popular with hikers and walkers but if you hike early you can find some solitude.

If you like flat trails, you might be happy hiking elsewhere - the trail heads up natural stone stairs and it requires a little climbing.

But you don’t need to be a mountain climber to complete this trail - it’s very popular with families.

The trail treats hikers to some nice views, especially in months when there’s less foliage. In warmer months, you might not enjoy the same river views but you might be treated to the sight of trailside wildflowers.

Parking for the trail is available nearby at Riverside Park and bathrooms are available seasonally. Learn more about the Devil’s Staircase on The Janesville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau website. Once you've climbed the heights of the Devil's Staircase, here's an actual canyon hike in Wisconsin that everyone should experience.
