West Virginia has some great places in nature to explore. Among them are these great state forests.
1. Coopers Rock State Forest
This state forest near Bruceton Mills got its name from a fugitive who hid from police in the area of the forest’s famous overlook, according to its website. The park has 12,713 acres and is located 13 miles east of Morgantown and 8 miles west of Bruceton Mills.
2. Kanawha State Forest
Kanawha State Forest has 9,300 acres and is located 7 miles from Charleston. The forest has places to camp, hiking trails and a playground.
3. Calvin Price State Forest
This forest has 9,482 acres and is located in Pocahontas and Greenbrier counties. It was purchased in 1953 from the New River Lumber Company.
More than two thirds of the park is accessible only by hiking.
4. Greenbrier State Forest
Greenbrier State Forest has more than 5100 acres and is located between Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs.
5. Kumbrabow State Forest
This state forest in Randolph County has 9,474 acres.
6. Seneca State Forest
There are nearly 12,000 acres of woodlands to hike in this state forest in Pocahontas County. It also has a 4-acre lake for fishing.
