Whether you've lived in the state for decades or just a few years, you've likely yet to exhaust all of the options for exploring the incredible landscapes of the Mountain State. For proof of this, look no further than Seneca Rocks, West Virginia. This otherworldly rock formation is one that every outdoor enthusiast should experience at least once!
Aside from the New River Gorge, Seneca Rocks might just be one of the most recognizable natural wonders in West Virginia.
Tucked away in Monongahela National Forest in the Eastern Panhandle of the state, this breathtaking rock formation is especially popular among rock climbers.
The formation stands nearly 900 feet above the confluence of Seneca Creek and the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River. Understandably, this striking landmark has quite a history.
Evidence suggests that Native Americans from the Archaic Period likely camped in the area. Moreover, the "Seneca Trail," also known as the Great Indian Warpath, followed the nearby stretch of the Potomac River, using the route for both war and trade.
For an unforgettable adventure, visitors can choose to hike to the top of Seneca Rocks. The hike begins at the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center and makes its way all the way to the top.
The 2.6-mile round-trip trail promises an absolutely breathtaking view from the top!
Whether you opt to climb or hike this incredible West Virginia rock formation, you'll agree that it's nothing short of a national treasure.
