Loudoun Heights Trail Is A Gorgeous Forest Trail In West Virginia That Will Take You To A Hidden Overlook

In a state as beautiful as West Virginia, why waste another minute inside? There's so much out there to explore. We are loaded down with mountains, parks, and nature preserves that make getting outside easy. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is one of the best parks in the Mountain State. The merging of the mighty Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers is a magical sight. With nearly 4,000 square acres of territory, there's a lot to see here. The park is filled with miles of trails and several historical sites. One of our very favorite trails at Harpers Ferry is the Loudoun Heights Trail.

The entire trail from Loudoun Heights to Split Rock is about six miles. Since it's an out-and-back trail, you can just do a portion if you don't feel up to doing the whole distance.

Talk about a trail with incredible views! Harpers Ferry is such a lovely national park, and this is a great way to see it.

There are several lookout points along the trail, so make sure to take a few minutes to rest at each one to get the best views.

There is a bit of elevation gain, so the full hike may not be the best idea if you are an inexperienced hiker. The full incline over the six miles is almost 1,500 feet!

There's a little bit of a rocky scramble at the beginning of the trail, but after that, it's fairly smooth sailing.

The trail is not too far from the roadway, so the first few miles have a bit of traffic noise. That will ease off as you get away from civilization, don't worry!

Since the parking lot at the trailhead is tiny, you may want to arrive a little early. As always, make sure to bring water and wear proper hiking attire!
